GEORGES DUVERNE (France, 1870–1955). “Oblivion,” c. 1930. Gilded bronze with cold enamel. Features a number engraved in marble. Measurements: 30 x 13 x 12 cm. A female figure in a contemplative pose, depicted in a composition of stylized lines and refined volumes, characteristic of the Art Deco style of the 1920s and 1930s. The work, titled “Oblivion,” combines the expressive modeling of the bronze with the chromatic finish of the cold enamel, set on a marble base that reinforces its ornamental character. The figure’s posture and the delicacy of its execution evoke the decorative sculpture of the period’s interest in movement, dance, and the stylization of the human body. Georges Duvernet’s body of work includes various female figures and dance-inspired compositions, conceived in the elegant and dynamic language of Art Deco. Oblivion exists in different variations, both in terms of its dimensions and the materials used. Some versions combine bronze, ivory, and marble, in the tradition of chryselefantine, while others feature different types of stone in their bases.
