GUSTAVE VAN VAERENBERGH (Belgium, 1873–1927). “Female Bust,” 1910. Grated marble. Signed. Measurements: 31 x 27 x 14 cm. Bust of a young woman wearing a scarf or headdress and a draped cloth over her shoulders. A sculptural female bust carved from marble depicting a young woman. The figure is depicted with a scarf or headdress covering her head and a draped cloth over her shoulders—elements that lend elegance and delicacy to the composition. The face has a serene expression and idealized features, while the rendering of the hair and fabrics demonstrates the sculptor’s attention to detail and technical mastery. Particularly noteworthy is the rendering of the folds in the cloth, which lend volume and naturalism to the figure. Gustave Van Vaerenbergh received his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he studied from 1888 to 1890. After completing his studies, he moved to the Brussels region. In 1901, he was living in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, where he was professionally registered as a plaster mold maker (mouleur en plâtre). Later, in 1902, he settled in Schaerbeek, where he carried out much of his artistic work. By 1907, he was officially listed as a sculptor. A key part of his career was linked to the Carli-Frères workshop, located in Schaerbeek (Brussels), which specialized in the production of sculptures in marble, bronze, and terracotta. Van Vaerenbergh worked for this company from the early 20th century until 1925.
