Model of a spiral staircase. 19th century. Cast iron, painted. In good condition, with slight wear on the paint layer. Measurements: 76 x 31.5 x 31.5 cm. This model is an interesting example of 19th-century iron architecture, a period in which the use of this material allowed for the development of new construction solutions, combining strength, visual lightness, and functionality. The scale model accurately reproduces a spiral staircase, whose steps are arranged around a central axis and are bordered by a railing of vertical balusters that runs along the ascending path until it leads to an upper circular landing. The regularity of the structural elements and the careful execution of the curves highlight the attention paid to the technical aspects of the design. This type of model is linked to the rise of foundries and the gradual industrialization of architecture during the 19th century, when the mass production of metal components facilitated the widespread use of iron staircases in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Their strength, ease of assembly, and ability to make the most of limited space contributed to their widespread adoption. In this context, scale models allowed for the study of proportions and assembly systems, in addition to serving as tools for presenting designs.
