Régence-style writing desk. France, Napoleonic III period, third quarter of the 19th century. Veneered in rosewood and ebony, with fruit-motif marquetry and feather-line inlay. Gilded bronze mounts. It shows slight signs of wear and scuffs consistent with its age. Measurements: 77 x 152 x 88 cm. French historicism during the Second Empire revived the most sumptuous models of 17th- and 18th-century cabinetmaking, reinterpreting them through an extraordinary wealth of materials and ornamental elements. This Régence-style writing desk reflects this trend, combining a structure of sinuous profiles and cabriole legs with elaborate fruit-wood marquetry. The tabletop features a symmetrical composition of floral motifs, scrollwork, and garlands of foliage on a dark background, bordered by bands of feathered veneer and a perimeter molding of gilded bronze. The front features a central drawer, flanked by panels decorated with herringbone-patterned veneers and embellished with gilded moldings. Particularly noteworthy are the sculptural corner mounts, shaped as female busts or espagnolettes, inspired by 18th-century French cabinetmaking. The finials on the legs and the central mask complete a richly ornate design. The meticulous execution of the marquetry and the hallmarks of the different woods and bronze elements reflect the refinement of French decorative arts from the Napoleon III period.
