The son of Francesco I d’Este and Maria Caterina Farnese, Alfonso IV married Laure Martinozzi, niece of Cardinal Mazarin, in 1655 in the presence of Louis XIV, and died prematurely at the age of twenty-seven. As an ally of France, he secured the town of Correggio under the Treaty of the Pyrenees, thereby becoming part of the diplomatic network of Louis XIV and Mazarin. He reigned from the sumptuous ducal palace of Sassuolo, a Baroque residence adorned with illusionistic frescoes, and from the ducal palace of Modena, whose gallery housed one of the richest collections in Europe. He died young at the age of 27, four years after the start of his reign.
