Borchert, Christian Portrait of the M. Family (Electrical Engineer; Economist), Cottbus 1983. Vintage gelatin silver print. 12.8 x 17.9 cm. Titled and dated by the photographer in pencil and stamped with the photographer’s mark on the reverse. This photograph is part of Christian Borchert’s extensive long-term project “Familienporträts” (Family Portraits), which documented diverse social environments in East Germany from the 1970s to the 1990s. Distancing himself from official state propaganda, Borchert focused on the subtle realities of domestic life, using precise compositions and natural lighting to reveal the unique social status, personal taste, and psychological dynamics of each family within their private spaces. – A few small nicks in the margins; otherwise in excellent condition. Lit.: Gosbert Adler and Wilmar Koenig, eds. DDR Foto: Freunde der Werkstatt für Fotografie, Berlin: Heenemann, 1985, ill. p. 50.
