Peru Photographer: Rafael Castillo Gómez (1844–1887). Peruvian Funerary and Archaeological Objects. 1880s. Albumen print. 21.7 x 16.5 cm. Annotated in pencil on the reverse: “4.” Castillo’s carefully staged survey brings together a mummified body and three mummified heads with ceramics, figurines, textiles, and cordage, documenting the late nineteenth-century collection and display of Peruvian funerary material. Such images made excavated objects and human remains portable for scholarly, museum, and private collections, while detaching them from their burial contexts. The group may be related to the collection of William T. Smithies, whose Peruvian holdings included funerary skulls, false heads, and textiles from the Rímac Valley. – Sheet with a slight curl, minimal handling marks, and slight fading; otherwise in excellent condition.
