Some are annotated in pencil on the reverse; a few are numbered on the negative in the lower margin. In 1890, Paul Nadar traveled through the Caucasus and Turkestan via the military Transcaspian Railway to Samarkand and Tashkent in connection with the Tashkent Exhibition. Alongside his large-format work, he used Kodak flexible film and the Express Détective Nadar camera to take quick, circular-format photographs. This collection includes camel caravans, road and waterside scenes, local markets, portraits and group photos, religious architecture, and scenes of daily life. Upon returning to Paris, Nadar announced 1,800 photographs from the journey and promoted the work through lectures, publications, and international exhibitions throughout 1896. – Sheets with slightly uneven edges, occasional handling creases and fingerprints; silver mirroring along the edges of a few prints; otherwise in good to very good condition.
