Marconi, Gaudenzio Academic nude with globe. 1870s. Albumen print. 26.6 x 19.3 cm. Numbered "143" in the lower right corner of the negative; faint blue pencil annotation on the reverse. Gaudenzio Marconi specialized in academic nude studies, produced in Paris and later in Brussels for painters and sculptors. His photographs translate the conventions of life drawing into carefully staged studio compositions, using drapery, props, and classical references to lend the figure an allegorical character. The present work belongs to this intersection of academic instruction and nineteenth-century studio photography. – Markedly curled, with pronounced handling creases and buckling; small surface loss in the upper left corner, small edge tears, and light edge and corner wear, most pronounced in the upper left; tears repaired on the reverse; light soiling and scattered small stains on the reverse; overall in fair condition.
