Daguerreotypes Photographer: Carl Gustav Oehme (1817–1881). Portrait of an older woman. Mid-1850s. Quarter-plate daguerreotype, with a gilt-lined paper border; photographer’s label, address “Jäger Str. No. 19,” and annotations in ink or pencil on the reverse of the daguerreotype, mounted under glass in a contemporary ornamental wooden frame. Carl Gustav Oehme was an early German photographer and camera maker. He studied the daguerreotype process in Paris after meeting Louis Daguerre in 1840 and continued to produce daguerreotypes until 1862. That same year, Oehme was awarded a medal at the World’s Fair in London. – Frame has chips and missing parts; some oxidation along the edges of the plate, more pronounced along the right edge, and some spots on the glass and plate; otherwise, the plate is in good condition.
