Baldus, Édouard Notre-Dame Cathedral, West Facade, Paris. 1857. Salted-paper print, mounted on card. 43.8 x 33.8 cm (mount 63.8 x 48.5 cm). Numbered “34” on the negative in the lower right corner. Taken from an elevated window in a neighboring building, this frontal view emphasizes the geometric order and sculptural richness of Notre-Dame’s west façade. It was produced during the cathedral’s nineteenth-century restoration, before Viollet-le-Duc’s spire was added, and is part of Baldus’s numbered series of views of Parisian monuments. – Mount shows light soiling and water staining along the lower margin, light handling creases, and a small tear in the left margin. The print has a small tear in the upper-right sky, a light surface abrasion near the upper edge, and dark vertical retouching marks in the lower-left area; otherwise, it has strong tones and is well preserved. Lit.: Malcolm R. Daniel, with an essay by Barry Bergdoll. *The Photographs of Édouard Baldus*. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art; Montreal: Canadian Centre for Architecture, 1994, ill. p. 188.
