Lalique, René Unique Bowl and a Cover René Lalique Unique Serpents Bowl and a Cover, circa 1902 Mold-blown glass, silver 4 x 6-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches (10.2 x 16.5 x 11.4 cm) (overall) Marks to glass: Lalique Marks to silver: LALIQUE, (Austrian import mark) René Lalique was perhaps the world's most successful, and certainly most fashionable, jeweler by the late 1890s, counting numerous international luminaries including Sarah Bernhardt amongst his clientele. His prominence was confirmed by a triumphant display at the Paris Exposition of 1900, attended by millions including the fabulously wealthy Armenian entrepreneur Calouste Gulbenkian, already one of Lalique's biggest and most discriminatory patrons. The museum he bequeathed his collection to in Lisbon contains dozens of spectacular works by Lalique, most of which are unique and date from the 'transitional' period between jewelry and glassmaking, between about 1895 and 1912. Very few examples of this work exist outside of major museums, only a few of which have anything of the genre. This unique and exquisite bowl and cover is academically and historically significant and among the precious few such items ever to appear at auction. Whoever it lands with will be most fortunate. A comparable Serpents bowl is held in the collection of the Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal.
