Lalique, René Project de Collier Paons René Lalique Project de Collier Paons, circa 1900 Watercolor, pencil, and gouache on B.F.K. Rives paper 15-3/8 x 22 inches (39.1 x 55.9 cm) (sheet) Signed and inscribed in ink lower right: R. Lalique PROVENANCE: Camard & Associés, Paris, Arts Décoratifs du XXe Siècle, June 6, 2007, lot 22; Private collection, New York. "Design for a neck ornament. To Madame Waldeck-Rousseau, with my respects and apologies for being unable to come this evening. R. Lalique." This large and remarkable drawing is dedicated in René Lalique's hand to Madame Waldeck-Rousseau, who came to prominence as the wife of her second husband, Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau, Prime Minister of France from 1899 to 1902. Marie Waldeck-Rousseau (née Durvis) was a member of fashionable Parisian Belle Epoque society, a notable sculptress and member of the Salon des Artistes Français, thus an ideal candidate to befriend and patronize René Lalique. This may be the largest recorded drawing by Lalique, and is offered as a fully formed and composed painting rather than a jewelry design, the overwhelming majority of which Lalique drew realistically and to scale. Extremely few of his drawings are signed. HID00307232019 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice Signed and inscribed in ink lower right: R.
