Wellenstein, Walter "Small Still Life with Paper Helmet, Candle, and Cigar" Oil on hardboard. 1959. 24 x 29.3 cm. Signed “Wellenstein” in black with a brush on the lower left and dated; on the reverse, signed “WALTER WELLENSTEIN” in black with a quill pen, dated, titled, and with information on the location and dimensions. A small-format still life featuring characteristic symbols of transience: a lit cigar, a candle that has burned down nearly to the end, and, between them, a folded paper hat that could catch fire at any moment—symbolizing the existential uncertainty of that era. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
