8370 - Topor, Roland

Topor, Roland "Autorité est parfaitement avilissante" Pen and ink in black on vellum. Approx. 26 x 21 cm. Signed "Topor" in pen and ink on the right side of the image; titled or labeled in pencil at the bottom margin. Topor comments on the stark depiction in the lower margin: Autorité est parfaitement avilissante. Elle avilit celui qui l'exerce et qui la subit. (Authority is profoundly degrading. It debases both the one who exercises it and the one who submits to it). A surreal scene, drawn with a sharp pen in his characteristic, dense hatching technique so forcefully that the paper’s surface is torn in places. “Roland Topor is a human firework that sparks in all directions, loud and jarring, entertaining and terrifying.” (Ronald Searle, quoted from diogenes.ch, accessed June 24, 2026).
