Siewert, Gerdt Marian Surreal Industrial Landscape Oil on canvas. 1970s. 57 x 77.5 cm. Signed "GMSiewert" in black with a brush in the lower left corner. Siewert initially worked as a stage and press photographer in the GDR before fleeing to Hamburg in the late 1960s, where he worked as a painter and graphic artist. His works are attributed to Magic Realism and always contain satirical elements in addition to social criticism. In this work, for example, the artist places a naked, shapely female torso—brightly illuminated as a scale—in an otherwise apocalyptic and gloomy industrial landscape, over which a menacing black cloud hovers.
