Siewert, Gerdt Marian The Man with the Golden Visor Oil on hardboard. 1972. 50 x 40 cm. Signed “GMSiewert” in blue with a brush in the upper right corner and dated; on the reverse, signed again, dated, titled, and labeled on an adhesive label in black ballpoint pen. In a close-up, as if seen through a camera lens and rendered in an almost photorealistic style, Siewert depicts an American astronaut on a mission to the moon. The earthly inferno is reflected in a surreal manner in the astronaut’s golden visor. With this “picture within a picture,” Siewert blurs the boundaries between dream and nightmare against the backdrop of the Cold War. At the same time, the depiction of the astronaut alludes to the American Apollo program, a defining political event of the era, whose lunar missions concluded in 1972 with Apollo 17.
