Schoenholtz, Michael Simple Figure White and gray marble, loosely set on a wenge wood base. 1980. Approx. 45 x 67 x 12 cm. Monogrammed "MS" and dated on the right side of the stone. Krimmel S 267. Michael Schoenholtz studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and was a master student of Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber from 1962 to 1963. He later taught at the university himself, beginning in 1971. Alongside Lothar Fischer, Michael Croissant, and others, he ranks among the most significant German sculptors of the postwar period. In contrast to the soft, often sinuous lines of his early works, Schoenholtz’s formal language became more angular and block-like in the early 1980s. The reduced, almost archaic forms coalesce here into a simple, stele-like figure; only the hands, with their finely detailed fingers, bridge the gap to figurative art. Height with base: 48 cm. – Included: Twelve signed and monogrammed collages by the artist, 2016. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
