Makarov, Nikolai Untitled Acrylic on hardboard. 41.5 x 51 cm. Monogrammed "MN" (ligated) in brown with a brush at the bottom center right. Nikolai Makarov depicts, in a fragmentary manner, a deserted street with a dreary storefront. With virtually no sense of perspective and characterized by a high degree of abstraction, the scene is submerged in a palette of various shades of brown, surrounded by a cracked, increasingly crumbling wall. Makarov, a native of Russia, moved to the former GDR with his parents as a child. He later completed his master’s studies under Werner Klemke at the Academy of Arts in Berlin; he then gained international recognition as a contemporary exponent of Symbolism. His visual worlds often appear as if viewed through a transparent veil. In this way, Makarov explores and pushes the limits of human perception, drawing on Old Master techniques such as chiaroscuro and finely nuanced sfumato glazes.
