Feinstein, Pavel Still Life with Roses and a Bowl Oil on canvas. 1992. 70 x 60 cm. Signed "PAVEL" in dark blue with a brush in the lower left corner and dated; the work number "476" is on the reverse. The dark background, characteristic of Feinstein’s unusual still lifes, makes the pink of the wide-open blossoms glow intensely. The brushwork and decisiveness of the color composition attest to a masterful command of painterly techniques. Still lifes are at the center of Feinstein’s artistic practice; he creates them without making any preliminary drawings or sketches. They arise intuitively from his own imagination and experiences. “For great painting is, after all, more than just applying paint, more than just technique and craftsmanship—which are certainly necessary; great art is almost a creation ‘EX NIHILIO,’ arising solely from a mental image, from thoughts, from an idea, from will, and from compulsion.” (Rabbi Ernst M. Stein, in: Pavel Feinstein, exhibition catalog, Galerie Taube, Berlin, 2001, n.p.).
