Bluth, Manfred "Little Big Horn Monument" Oil on canvas. 1954/63. 81 x 100 cm. Signed "Bluth" in green with a brush on the lower left and dated; signed again on the reverse of the stretcher with a brush in black as "MANFRED BLUTH, dated, titled, labeled “Berlin,” and marked with the dimensions; also labeled “Cat. 16” on the frame (by another hand). Clearly influenced by Max Ernst, this large-format landscape composition is at the same time rendered in miniature-like detail. In 1973, Bluth founded the artist group “Schule der neuen Prächtigkeit” (School of New Splendor) together with Johannes Grützke and Matthias Koeppel; the group sought to distinguish itself from abstract art through a realism characterized by irony.
