Wiiralt, Eduard [^] Puulõike sünd (The Birth of the Woodcut) Woodcut on sturdy, slightly textured, yellowish vellum. 1936. 14.2 x 10.3 cm (25.5 x 20.5 cm). Signed “Eduard Wiiralt.” Kangilaski 82. After completing his training in Tallinn and Dresden, the Estonian artist traveled to Morocco. In his early years, he was associated with Art Nouveau, but became increasingly influenced by German Expressionism and Surrealism. In the 1930s, he created striking, psychological portraits. In 1925, the artist moved to Paris, where he lived until 1938. Our print also dates from these years in Paris. Wiiralt is considered one of the most important masters of Estonian printmaking in the first half of the 20th century. A magnificent, crisp print with a wide margin. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
