Schiffer, Marcellus The Dancer Nina Hard Lithograph, watercolored, on vellum. 1920. 23.5 x 17 cm (27.6 x 24.2 cm). Schiffer, who trained as a painter, illustrator, and graphic artist under Emil Orlik, met the expressive dancer Nina Hard—also known as “Ada”—there in the summer of 1921. She had also served as a model for Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Schiffer soon began a romantic relationship with her (see adk.de, accessed September 28, 2026). He quickly found his calling in writing satires, couplets, and chansons. He developed a form of literary revue that was new to Berlin, created new forms of witty, musical-like musical theater together with the composer Mischa Spoliansky, and worked from 1922 to 1925 at the Berlin cabarets Wilde Bühne, Rampe, Tütü, Größenwahn, and Katakombe. His estate and that of his wife, Margo Lion, are now housed at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. – Included: Two additional lithographs by the artist. Provenance: Formerly from the estate of Joachim Ragoczy (student of Emil Orlik) - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
