Rudofsky, Bernard Fair on the Spree Watercolor and black chalk on vellum. 1929. Approx. 34 x 38 cm. Signed “RUDOFSKY” in brown pen at the lower right and dated; on the reverse, dated again in pencil, inscribed “BERLIN,” and stamped “not for sale.” A watercolor executed with a swift and confident hand, depicting a row of carnival wagons lined up along the banks of the Spree—possibly on Berlin’s Fischerinsel—with loose contours and a dynamic composition. The Austrian architect, author, critic, curator, and designer Rudofsky worked at the architectural firm of Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in Berlin between 1928 and 1930. This watercolor sketch of the banks of the Spree was created during that time. The artist became famous for his unorthodox fashion designs and for the MoMA exhibition “Architecture without Architects” (1964), which he conceived.
