8110 - Reuter-Raabe, Ellinor

Reuter-Raabe, Ellinor Wittenbergplatz, Berlin Oil on canvas. Probably 1920s/1930s. 69.5 x 60 cm. Signed "E. Reuter-Raabe" in black with a brush on the lower left, marked “S.” in blue crayon on the reverse of the canvas, marked “Reuter Wittenbergplatz” in pencil on the stretcher, and bears an old cloakroom tag. Very little is known about the artist Ellinor Reuter-Raabe. However, she is listed in the 1926 Art Market Handbook with the address “Wittenbergplatz 3 a.” It can therefore be assumed that Reuter-Raabe painted this view of Berlin’s Wittenbergplatz from her window. She captures the urban scene in a cropped view, with the tree—dark and strikingly placed in the composition—serving as a vertical counterbalance to the strictly horizontally layered cityscape. The period-typical automobiles in the foreground lend the image the character of a direct historical document and convey a vivid impression of Berlin’s cityscape in the 1920s and 1930s. Extremely rare on the art market.
