Pankok, Bernhard "Salome" Watercolor with gold highlights on vellum, with additional gold highlights on a plastic film firmly mounted over it, mounted in a mat. 1916. 49.8 x 30 cm (mat opening). Signed “Pankok,” dated, and titled. The German painter, draftsman, graphic artist, sculptor, and architect Bernhard Pankok was also successful as a designer and set designer. After studying in Düsseldorf and Berlin, he worked as a self-taught artist in Munich beginning in 1892. Starting in 1895, he received his first commissions for the magazines *Pan* and *Jugend*, which brought him recognition. His first pieces of furniture were exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast, and beginning in 1900, he received his first architectural commissions, including interior design. Beginning in 1903, he served as a professor in Stuttgart. In his multifaceted body of work, he was commissioned, among other things, to design numerous stage sets and costumes for various operas and plays. Presented here is a design for Salomé’s opulently embroidered dress. What is particularly unusual is that Pankok created part of the gold embellishments on a transparent plastic film, which he mounted at the corners over the watercolor. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
