Nolde, Emil "Musician and Children" (Street Musician and Children) Etching on JWZanders vellum. 1909. 11 x 8 cm (50 x 35.5 cm). Signed “Emil Nolde” and titled. Schiefler/Mosel 127 I (of II). This broad-line etching on grainy clay paper was created by Nolde in reference to his (burnt) painting “Bagpiper and Children,” 1904 (Urban 150). In the spring of 1908, in the village of Weißig near Jena, Nolde created pen-and-pencil drawings of street children; this etching, with its lively, almost calligraphic lines, should likely be viewed in this context as well. The irregularly distributed dots lend the image an additional lively shimmer. Schiefler/Mosel are aware of only five copies in this first state, prior to the lightening, and twelve additional prints in the second, lightened state, produced by Felsing and Sabo, respectively. A magnificent, deep-dark print with a very wide margin, featuring the artist’s mark on the left. Extremely rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
