Kuhfuss, Paul Märkischer Waldsee (Spring at the Forest Lake) Watercolor on vellum. 1952. 51 x 66 cm. Signed “Kuhfuss” in black with a brush in the lower left corner; on the reverse, on the backing paper, bears the estate stamp, is inscribed there, and is numbered “1089.” Hellwich/Röske 52/22. On the reverse, on the backing paper, also titled “Märkischer See” and “Spring Forest.” Radiating with Kuhfuss’s distinctive, yellowish-green color palette, the Märkisch landscape is filled with an almost magical glow that lends it a fantastical quality. “Paul Kuhfuss has now found his unmistakable artistic voice. His imaginative, poetic, and at times dreamlike paintings largely defy classification within the stylistic movements or trends of his time” (Peter Röske, in: Hellwich/Röske, p. 14).
