Jawlensky, Alexej von Small Head Pen and ink in brown on bluish vellum. 1929. 10 x 10.6 cm. Dated in pencil (presumably by another hand) in the upper right corner; inscribed on the reverse of the mat as “Alexej von Jawlensky/pen-and-ink drawing” and dated again, with an old adhesive label. Jawlensky 611 (Vol. IV, p. 230). This sketchy pen-and-ink drawing depicts a head in half-profile, its features outlined with a few nervously drawn lines. The sparse line work focuses on the eyes, nose, and mouth, lending the sheet an immediate, searching quality. The work is known to the Jawlensky Archivio SA, Muralto. Provenance: Private collection, Hamburg - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not listed in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
