Heckendorf captures the beach scene using an expressive palette of deep blues, purples, and warm reds. While in the foreground the silhouettes of deck chairs and bathers blend into the surroundings, the artist directs the viewer’s gaze toward the horizon: a large steamship on the sea and the silhouette of a coastal town, delicately hinted at along the right edge of the painting, evoke associations of longing and new beginnings.
