Haupt, Karl Hermann Exercise in Surface Composition I Watercolor over pencil on brownish vellum. 1925. 23 x 32 cm. Signed "K.H.Haupt" in pencil and dated in the lower left corner. Karl Hermann Haupt studied painting in the early 1920s at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle before transferring to the State Bauhaus in Weimar in 1923–24/25. There, among other things, he attended the preparatory courses taught by Josef Albers and László Moholy-Nagy. He subsequently returned to Burg Giebichenstein as a master student. This strictly geometric-abstract drawing was created during this period. The composition of yellow and red squares, horizontal and vertical bars, and a checkerboard pattern exemplifies the Bauhaus approach to form, color, and constructive order on the picture plane.
