LEONHARD BECK (c. 1480–1542) Saint Ermelinde Line engraving on paper Late print Restoration in the lower right corner and pinholes Height: 23.6 cm - Width: 21 cm (including the outline) This engraving is part of the series depicting the saints of Emperor Maximilian’s relatives, family, and in-laws—one of the extensive commemorative projects printed at the request of Emperor Maximilian I to celebrate the glory of the Habsburgs. The illustrations were created by the German engravers Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmair, and Hans Springinklee between 1516 and 1518. However, the project remained unfinished upon the emperor’s death in 1519, and the woodcuts remained in the Vienna Library until their rediscovery by Adam von Bartsch, who published them in 1799.
