10 - WATERMAN fountain pen, Serenité White Tiger model, crafted using the Maki-e technique, combining the iconic ergonomic curved shape of the Sérénité collection with traditional Japanese lacquer techniques. Numbered 72 in a limited series of 120 pieces. Signed. Features a white tiger design. Since ancient times, the tiger has been revered as a deity that brings happiness, much like the phoenix, the dragon, and the tortoise. The Chinese legend of the Four Gods held that the Emperor was the North Star (center) and that four deities protected each quadrant (Dragon/Tiger/Phoenix/Tortoise). Japanese emperors were influenced by Chinese thought, and this belief system spread throughout Japan. People associated a specific color with each quadrant and god, representing their power: the Tiger with white (West), the Phoenix with red (South), the Dragon with blue (East), and the Tortoise with black (North). Although tigers are not native to Japan, they are greatly admired for their legendary power. The combination of the tiger and bamboo is a timeless motif of courage and strength—a theme that appears repeatedly in murals and other artwork. The motif was especially favored by the samurai. It features a central band with a bamboo design and a metallic white clip that contrasts with the background. The nib is made of solid 18-karat (750) gold with a white rhodium-plated finish to match the pen’s details. It fills via cartridge or a piston converter for bottled ink. 14.2 cm in length. Boxed.
