Mother of God of Fëdorov (Feodorovskaya) - Early 20th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 36.5 x 30 cm Historically linked to the Romanov dynasty—as formally attested by the inscription in Cyrillic characters in the background (Феодоровскія Пресвятыя Богородицы)—this icon depicts the Virgin Mary in a half-length pose. Her head is tilted sharply toward the Child Jesus, who clings to her on the left in an intimate embrace. Mary wears a dark-brown *maphorion* (veil) characterized by dense, stylized folds. The Christ Child, wrapped in an orange *chiton* (tunic) and a mantle that leaves his left leg partially exposed down to the bare knee, wraps his outstretched right arm around his Mother’s neck, while his left hand rests on her chest. The faces of the sacred figures—marked by distinct features and a stern, melancholic expression—stand out against the background and the gilded halos, which have acquired a warm, burnished patina over time. On the brown side margins of the panel (*polja*)—where there is visible paint loss and flaking of the preparatory layer, particularly in the upper right corner—two small vertical panels contain full-length depictions of patron saints: the left panel shows a Guardian Angel in white robes and a pristine mantle, while the right panel depicts Saint Martha (Святая Марфа) in dark monastic attire, shown in an attitude of prayer and intercession directed toward the central scene. H.E. Most Rev. Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Paint loss and other losses.
