Mother of God of Vladimir (Vladimirskaya) - Early 20th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 31.5 x 26 cm As clearly indicated by the calligraphic inscription in Old Church Slavonic—written in dark characters on the background to the right of the Virgin (“Владимирская Престла Бцы”)—the composition adheres with absolute fidelity and extraordinary expressive vigor to the highly venerated Byzantine archetype of the Virgin of Tenderness (Eleusa). Mary is depicted in a half-length portrait, her head gently inclined toward the Divine Infant, who is held on her left arm and clings to her tenderly, pressing his cheek against hers in an intimate and poignant communion of affection that prophetically foreshadows the sorrows of the Passion. With his left arm, the Child embraces the Virgin’s neck, while gazing up at her with an expression of absolute, filial devotion. In terms of color and decoration, the work is distinguished by a masterful, high-caliber painting technique: the Virgin’s maphorion—which entirely envelops her head and shoulders—is rendered in a deep, solemn brownish-purple, edged with rich golden borders and adorned on the forehead and left shoulder with characteristic gold stars, a dogmatic symbol of her perpetual virginity. A magnificent, dense network of geometric golden highlights (assist) radiates across and defines the garments of the Child Jesus, imbuing the fabric with a warm, vibrant, and almost uncreated spiritual light. The original gold-leaf background—well-preserved around the large, circular halo that crowns the sacred figures—bears the traditional abbreviated sacred monograms in Cyrillic characters (“МР ѲУ”). The flesh tones (sankir) retain the austere, hieratic definition of the ancient canon, yet are enriched by subtle gradations that enhance the profound, melancholic sweetness of the Virgin’s almond-shaped eyes—eyes that seem to gaze beyond the viewer. H.E. Most Rev. Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Previous restorations and minor paint losses.
