Holy Face of Novgorod - Late 19th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 31.5 x 26.5 cm A celebrated Russian variant of the Mandylion (Spas Nerukotvornyj—“The Savior Not Made by Human Hands”). The composition focuses strictly on the hieratic face of Christ the Savior, miraculously imprinted upon the sacred cloth (ubrus), which is held aloft by two adoring archangels—finely rendered in the upper corners. The face of Jesus, distinguished by large, penetrating, symmetrical eyes fixed upon the viewer, features a characteristic beard parted into two points, with long hair parted in the center and falling in stylized, wavy locks along the sides. His head is set within a large, golden, cruciform halo, adorned with the traditional Greek letters signifying the divine attribute of “He Who Is” (“Ὁ Ѡ Н”). Below the chin, on the edge of the skillfully draped fabric, a red scroll bears an identifying calligraphic inscription in Old Church Slavonic. Stylistically, the work reflects a high level of devotional artistry, faithful to the canons of the ancient Russian tradition: the flesh tones are rendered with subtle gradations and deep shadows, lending volume and majesty to the face. A broad, understated ochre-orange border defines the sacred space of the icon. His Excellency the Most Reverend Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Minor restorations.
