Christ Pantocrator (Gospod' Vsedržitel') - Late 19th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 31.5 x 26.5 cm The Almighty Sovereign, the theological focal point of Orthodox sacred art. The Savior is depicted frontally, from the waist up, exuding a sense of solemn, regal authority. His right hand is raised in the traditional Orthodox gesture of blessing, while his left hand holds a magnificent, monumental open book—a Gospel lectionary—whose pages feature finely illuminated text in Old Church Slavonic, rendered in precise, calligraphic script. His facial features—marked by large, expressive, symmetrical eyes, a delicately rendered, bifurcated beard, and flowing hair that falls upon his shoulders—convey a deep, penetrating gaze, one that bridges the severity of a judge with the mercy of a Redeemer. In terms of ornamentation and materiality, the piece stands as a masterpiece of highly refined late 19th-century craftsmanship: the background and the imposing circular halo crowning Christ’s head are entirely crafted using punches, burins, and incised faux-relief techniques on gold leaf, featuring a dense, radiating geometric pattern and scale-like motifs that emulate the opulent metal riza (protective covers) of the period. The entire scene is enclosed by an elaborate, rich border in an exquisite Neo-Byzantine style, featuring intricate repoussé work—vegetal scrolls and polychrome floral motifs in delicate shades of pink, green, and burgundy—which frames the work with extraordinary decorative impact. The painting style reflects the refined academic naturalism of the Romanov era, evident in the softness of the flesh tones—blended over a dark base—and in the masterful volumetric rendering of the drapery: the red chiton and the golden-ochre himation, both embellished with delicate highlights. His Excellency the Most Reverend Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Previous restorations and minor paint losses.
