Deesis - Early 20th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 34 x 27 cm Presented here in its “extended” version, the composition exhibits a rare complexity, transforming the pictorial space into a solemn celestial liturgy. At the center sits Christ Pantocrator—hieratic and monumental. Enthroned upon a finely adorned royal seat—a visible symbol of His cosmic dominion—the Savior holds an open book in His left hand, while His right hand is raised in a gesture of solemn blessing. A host of supplicants converges toward Him, drawn by a carefully balanced diagonal composition and spiritual tension. Flanking the throne are the Virgin Mary—the Hodegetria, or “She Who Shows the Way”—and Saint John the Baptist, the Forerunner, both depicted in perpetual prayer on behalf of humanity. Behind them, arranged according to a strictly defined theological hierarchy, stand the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, followed by the Church Fathers, metropolitans, and monastic saints, all prostrate in profound veneration at the foot of the throne. In terms of form, the icon is distinguished by an extraordinary, miniature-like precision in the rendering of garments and architectural details, where deep shades of blue and imperial purple are set against meticulously executed, graphic highlights. The background, entirely covered in pure gold leaf, serves as more than mere decoration; it becomes a metaphysical light, dissolving the dimension of time and transporting the observer into the eternal present of the Kingdom. H.E. Most Rev. Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Minor color loss.
