Christ Pantocrator - Late 19th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 26.5 x 21.5 cm This work is a superb example of Russian Orthodox sacred painting on a gold ground, masterfully executed according to the canons of the Byzantine tradition and distinguished by an ornamental scheme of extraordinary refinement. The figure of Christ Pantocrator is depicted in a half-length, strictly frontal, and solemn pose. With his right hand raised toward his chest, the Savior performs the traditional gesture of blessing in accordance with Eastern liturgical practice, while his left hand delicately supports an open Book of the Gospels, turned toward the viewer. On the facing pages, an elegant calligraphic inscription in Church Slavonic Cyrillic characters reads: “Приидите ко Мне вси труждающиеся...” (“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened…”). The face of Jesus—with its perfect oval shape and noble, symmetrical features—expresses a stern yet serene spiritual majesty, underscored by large brown eyes that gaze intensely at the observer, and a short, bifurcated beard. The Savior wears a deep, purple-red tunic, draped in a flowing, elegant manner by a broad, dark-green mantle (*himation*). The sacred image is set against a rich, radiant golden background, featuring a complex, continuous geometric pattern that mimics the texture of precious damask fabric. Surrounding Christ’s head is a large cruciform halo—richly embossed and edged with raised, hemispherical studs—which bears the traditional Greek monograms for the Incarnate Word, as well as the identifying inscription “Гдь Вседержитель” (“Lord Almighty”). The sacred scene is framed at the top by an arch and surrounded by a sumptuous border set against a gold background; this border is decorated with a complex, dense pattern of interwoven geometric motifs and multicolored arabesques in shades of blue and red, punctuated in the upper corners by elegant, floral-themed quatrefoil panels that evoke the Neo-Russian style of the late 19th century. H.E. Most Rev. Francisco-Javier Lozano Sebastián, Titular Archbishop of Penafiel and Apostolic Nuncio Emeritus. Item condition rating: **** good. The lot is in good condition, with normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. Minor restorations and paint losses
