Emile Muller et Compagnie, Ceramist & René Béclu (1881–1914), attributed to Portrait of Victor Hugo (1802–1885), ca. 1900 Glazed stoneware mask. Intaglio mark on the reverse: EMILE MULLER IVRY PARIS. Inscription: “Reproduction prohibited.” Approx. Height 38 cm; Width 25.5 cm; Depth 18 cm This mask of Victor Hugo, likely created in the early 20th century, is part of the rich body of work dedicated to the poet. A similar piece by the sculptor René Béclu was added to the Musée d’Orsay’s collections in 2020 (inventory no. RFMOS20201). It was produced by Émile Muller & Cie, a company renowned for its glazed stoneware pieces. René Béclu, a sculptor who died at the age of 32 in the trenches of World War I, is best known for the marble group *Le Secret*, acquired by the French government in 1913 and now housed in Lyon’s Tête d’Or Park. His enamel work, featuring water-green veins on a blue background, evokes the artistic explorations of Jean Carriès. Far from naturalism, Béclu offers an expressive and dramatic interpretation of Victor Hugo that is both powerful and unique.
