Liuba Boyadjeva, Bulgarian/Brazilian 1923-2005 - Bird, 1966; bronze, signed and dated on the reverse 'Liuba '66', H40.6 x W35 x D36 cm Note: Bulgarian artist Boyadjieva studied in Paris with Germaine Richier, and the impact of her post-war work can be seen in the present work, with its highly modern take on the subject of a bird. Boyadjieva became part of a post-war circle in Paris that included Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, and this work has a similarity to the primitive organic forms of her contemporaries Alicia Penalba and François Stahly. She later moved to Brazil and her work has been exhibited widely internationally, including at the Lasar Segall Museum under her married name ‘Liuba Wolf’.
