Jacques Germain, French 1915-2001 - Composition No.262, 1972; oil on canvas, 130 x 97 cm (ARR) Provenance: the Estate of the Artist; Artcurial-Briest, Paris, Art Moderne et Contemporain - Estampes du XXe Siecle, The Germain Estate Sale, 4th July 2002, lot 545; Private Collection, UK Note: bears the number 262 on the reverse. Jacques Germain was a central figure in taschiste painting in post-war Paris alongside Georges Mathieu, André Lanskoy and Jean-Paul Riopelle. The intense use of red and sense of expansion from a centralised point system in the present work suggests an affinity with the mature style of Serge Poliakoff. He exhibited with Galerie Charpentier and Galerie Maeght and his works are now in all important French collections including the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou and Musée d'Art Moderne.
