Henri Hayden, Polish/French 1883-1970 - Étude en rouge, 1964; gouache on paper, signed and dated lower left 'H Hayden 64', 49 x 49 cm (ARR) Provenance: Josephine Hayden (the Wife of the Artist); Private Collection, acquired from the above (according to previous cataloguing of the work); Bonhams, London, British and European Art including works from L'École de Paris, The Jewish Artists, 10th November 2021, lot 34; Private Collection Note: Hayden was a central figure in Cubism in pre-War Paris, exhibiting with the dealer Léonce Rosenberg, alongside Herbin, Picasso and Gris. In later works like the present work, Hayden explores pure colour in this still life composition, pushing representation to its limit. The all-over use of red creates an intense and immersive effect, reminiscent of Matisse’s ‘The Red Studio’.
