William Johnstone OBE, Scottish 1897-1981 - Border Landscape, 1926; oil on panel, signed and dated on the reverse 'W Johnstone 1926', 62.8 x 77 cm (ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, acquired directly from the Wife of the Artist in the 1990s Note: this is an important early work by Johnstone, the biomorphic forms and earthy palette evoking his major painting 'Summer, Selkirk, c.1927' now in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. Johnstone was one of the first British artists to develop a purely abstract language of painting, inspired simultaneously by his experiences of the landscape of the Scottish borders and of studying in Paris and the USA during the 1920s. Johnstone had his first one-man show at the iconic Weirtheim Gallery, and became associated with literary figures such as Wyndham Lewis, T. S. Eliot and fellow Scot Hugh McDiarmid, with whom he collaborated on the work 'Poems to Paintings'.
