186 - Jiří Kolář,

Jiří Kolář, Czech 1914-2002 - Bardu im Frühling, 1970; collage on board, signed and dated on the reverse 'Jiří Kolář 70', 26.3 x 45 cm (ARR) Note: Kolář was a Czech poet, writer and artist, his work often critical of the oppressive communist state in his home country. He would become a member of the existentialist group Skupina 42, alongside Jindřich Chalupecký, Ivan Blatný, Josef Kainar, Jiřina Hauková and Kamil Lhoták. In his collages he sought a disruptive effect, reflecting this fragility of the world around him. Kolář would eventually emigrate to Western Europe in the 1970s, finally settling in Paris. A large number of Kolar’s works are now in public collections, including with the Tate. His work was first exhibited in 1937 and has been shown internationally in museums including at the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1975, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid in 1996 and most recently at the National Gallery of Prague in 2018.
