Stephen Ward, British 1912-1963 - Portrait of a girl, 1963; pencil on paper, 28.3 x 18.4 cm (ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, gifted by the Artist Note: the current owner's family rented Lady Capell's Cottage, Watford Hertfordshire in the summer of 1963. The owner's father is Bill Lang, a prominent film producer, whose work spanned iconic British cinema, from classic drama to legendary comedies, including Oscar Wilde (1960), and A Fish Called Wanda (1988). The family invited Stephen Ward to stay and shelter him when his own flat was overwhelmed with the press during the Profumo Affair. Whilst there, he sketched the current owner's portrait, aged 7, and their brother using a sheet of readily available notepad. The next day, he was arrested after leaving the cottage. Ward is perhaps best known today for his involvement with the infamous Profumo Affair, but he was also celebrated for his portrait paintings, which he sold alongside his work as a society osteopath.
