Duncan Grant, British 1885-1978 - Grivet Monkey, page from a sketchbook, c.1968; biro on paper, inscribed lower right, 30 x 23.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: Martin Roche; Private Collection, acquired from the above Note: this is a working drawing for Grant's illustrations to ‘Monkey’ by Wu Cheng-en, when it was published by the Folio Society in 1968, however, this drawing was not used in the final publication. He worked from books of photographs lent to him by his neighbour, the critic Cyril Connolly. Duncan Grant was a central member of the Bloomsbury Group, closely associated with seminal figures in early 20th century British culture such as Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, E.M. Forster and Lytton Strachey, alongside the art critic Roger Fry, the latter having a particularly strong impact on Grant's artistic approach. Grant's works can be found in a wide number of collections throughout the country, including the Tate Britain and the V&A in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. With thanks to Richard Shone for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
