Jonathan Zutter (1928–1988) Portrait of a Young Woman, undated Charcoal and black chalk, with blue highlights Signed lower right “Zutter” Dimensions: Sheet: 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: framed area occupying the upper two-thirds of the sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s “Livre d’Or,” compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Description: A sensitive charcoal portrait—the head and shoulders of a young woman, her dark, parted hair framing a pale, delicately modeled oval face with dark eyes, set against a dark, vertically hatched background, with a small touch of blue at the collar. The composition and quiet dignity evoke a style of Italian Renaissance portraiture. Jonathan Zutter was a French painter born in Monaco, trained at the Geneva School of Fine Arts, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and the Royal Academy in The Hague; settling in Marseille in 1950, he painted portraits—primarily of young women—as well as landscapes, seascapes, and nudes, and is listed in the Bénézit. Hand-signed.
