Kees van Dongen (1877–1968) Woman with a Fan (The Spanish Woman), ca. 1955–1965 Original two-color lithograph (black and ochre) on vellum; a new composition in the style of Plate 2 from the “Women” album (1927). Signed in the stone in the lower right; numbered 14/60 in pencil in the lower left Dimensions: Sheet: 64.5 × 45 cm (25.4 × 17.7 in.) Image: approx. 41.5 × 33.5 cm (16.3 × 13.2 in.) Condition: Very fine condition; slight handling marks in the upper-right and lower-left margins, generous margins, a crease in the upper-right corner. Unframed. References: see Juffermans JL 10 (the related 1927 plate) Original lithograph printed in an edition of 60, likely at Pierre Chave’s studio in Vence, who printed several of Van Dongen’s original lithographs during this period; a Chave label found on another copy supports this. The subject is in the spirit of the most minimalist plate from the “Femmes” album (1927), but the drawing is entirely new: the proportions, fan, hair, and contours are all different. A Spanish dancer behind her fan, with only her eyes highlighted in ochre.
