Maurice Savin (1894–1973) The Street Vendors [TO BE VERIFIED: location, “in Liège”?], December 1969 Ballpoint pen Signed and inscribed by hand: “For Mr. and Mrs. Yves Guérin” Dimensions: Sheet: 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: to be specified Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). The dedication from December 1969 coincides exactly with the retrospective of 145 works by Maurice Savin at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice (December 1969–January 1970), directly documenting the artist’s presence in the milieu of Yves Guérin’s casino. Description: A scene of street vendors—the kind of everyday market life that Maurice Savin loved to depict. A painter, printmaker, ceramicist, and tapestry designer born in the Drôme region, a Knight of the Legion of Honor, and a long-time member of the Salon d’Automne committee, Savin celebrated peasant life and the light of the Midi in warm ochres and reds, earning him the reputation as the “unsung Bonnard.” Drawn in ballpoint pen and hand-signed in the collector’s guestbook.
